| Ritchard Ledgard to Deliver Key Note Address in Oticon'2019 at Chandigarh|| |
Ritchard Ledgard, the Executive Director, WFOT has consented to deliver the Key Note address and also will be the guest speaker at OTICON'2019. The 56th Annual National Conference of All India Occupational Therapists' Association (AIOTA) with international participation is being organized by AIOTA in cooperation with Occupational Therapy (OT) department of country's pride, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh (PGIMER) from 8th to 10th February, 2019. The theme of the conference is ‘Interdisciplinary Approach: Towards Comprehensive Healthcare’. Delegates from UK, USA, Canada, Sri Lanka and the Middle East Countries have consented to participate. The conference is being organized in a grand way, enriched with academics of high standards and cultural evenings infused with great entertainment by local artists and students of AIOTA's accredited OT Colleges from all over India. President, AIOTA: Dr. Anil Srivastava from Lucknow, is the Organizing Chairman, Dr. Bhavinder Singh Suchdev from PGIMER, Chandigarh is the Organizing Secretary and Dr. Punita V. | OT Global Day of Service & OT India Month 2018|| |
OT India month, 2018 (27th October to 26th November, 2018) beginning from World OT Day on 27th October, 2018 is an integral part of OT India calendar & AIOTA. I congratulate members of AIOTA, OT Colleges, State Branches/Chapters of AIOTA and the institutions with OT set up in government and private sector, on the occasion of World OT Day. I am confident that this year too, the World OT Day & OT India month will be celebrated with dedication and enthusiasm throughout the country.
The Theme proposed by WFOT for OT Day in 2018 is ‘Celebrating Our Global Community’. It impressively informs the unmatched value of occupational therapy in global community. OT India month celebration is aimed to promote OT and heighten its visibility in the society. | AIOTA Intervention in Kerala Floods 2018|| |
The state of Kerala had unusually high rains beginning in late July this year, causing severe floods encircling almost whole of the state. It was the worst flood of the century, in Kerala. Hundreds of people died and the damages were worth billions of rupees. 10000 KM of roads were damaged and thousands of homes were damaged and /or destroyed. With initiatives from AIOTA, the Kerala Branch/Chapter of AIOTA under the leadership of the Convener Dr. Joseph Sunny took adorable measures in cooperation of members of the branch to provide relief service for flood affected. Although OT's are not yet a part of the government-controlled disaster management team in Kerala. WFOT President Marilyn Pattison & President AIOTA Dr. Anil K. Srivastava sent letters of support to Union Health Minister, Chief Minister and Health Minister of the State of Kerala offering their full support with request for inclusion of occupational therapists in the disaster management team with key stake holders engaged in rehabilitation and relief work for the flood affected in Kerala.
Dr. Joseph Sunny, EC member, AIOTA & also Convener, Kerala Branch/Chapter of AIOTA met with Chief of Disaster Risk Reduction in the UN Environment Program Dr. Muralee Thummarukudy and Additional Chief Secretary Revenue & Disaster Management Shri P. H. Kurian IAS and requested for inclusion of occupational therapists in disaster management team of the state by producing supporting documents.
| AIOTA'S 2nd Annual Fellowship in Advanced Occupational Therapy in Neuro-Rehabilitation Inaugurated|| |
Academic Council of Occupational Therapy (ACOT) is organizing AIOTA's 2nd nine months duration annual fellowship in Advanced Occupational Therapy in Neuro-Rehabilitation (FAOT-NR, India) from 25th September, 2018 and will conclude in June 2019. Santosh, deemed to be University (Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Occupational Therapy), Ghaziabad and Department of Neurology of G. B. Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, New Delhi, have consented to collaborate as associate organizations for this prestigious academic event of AIOTA. Dr. Alok Sharma, a world-renowned neurosurgeon and Director Neurogen: Brain & Spine Institute, Navi Mumbai and Dr. Shashi Oberai, Vice President AIOTA were the eminent guests and speakers of the inaugural function organized at AIOTA National Headquarter, Nerul, Navi Mumbai on 25th September 2018. Dr. Alok Sharma has announced sponsoring a session on Neuro-Rehabilitation during OTICON'2019 at Chandigarh.
President AIOTA welcomed the invited guests, national & international resource faculties and participants via online live-video telecast. Dr. Jyothika N. Bijlani, Dean ACOT is the principal coordinator, Dr. Neeraj Mishra, EC Member, AIOTA from New Delhi, Dr. Lakshmanan S., Assistant Editor, IJOT from Bangalore and Dr. Shriharsh S. Jahagirdar from Mumbai are the coordinators for this fellowship program.
The annual fellowship programs provide unique opportunities for didactic as well as web-based learning, backed by expert supervision and evidence-based practice guidelines. It is open for members of AIOTA with postgraduate qualification with minimum of three years' experience in treating clients with neurological disorders.
| Inclusion of Occupational Therapist as Signatory in UDID Member Board|| |
Occupational Therapists are also included as signatory authority in the member board for issuance of Unique Identity Card for Disabled (UDID Card) in all categories. The order to this effect has been issued by the Dean of Government Medical College & Hospital, Aurangabad, Maharashtra dated 4th September, 2018.

AIOTA has signed an agreement regarding the offering of continuing OT education courses in India on different areas of OT practice, by OTcourses.com, 6081- Cliff Lane, Temple, TX 76502, USA. This memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by President AIOTA and President & CEO of OTCourses.com, will be reviewed after a period of three years (September, 2021) for its further continuation.
| The International Standard Classification of Occupations in Respect to Occupational Therapy Profession|| |
AIOTA has sent letter of resentment to International Labor Office (Health Workforce Issues Genève, Switzerland, for inclusion of occupational therapists within the category “other health professions not elsewhere described”, together with many dissimilar professionals such as podiatrists etc.' (ISCO-2269) in the International Standard Classification of Health-Related Professions.
This classification has been done by ignoring the fact that the modern occupational therapy has 75-85 years of history globally and is fully developed academically and clinically to cater to the needs of ailing community. AIOTA has requested for a favorable consideration in ISCO reclassification of occupational therapists during the process of the revision of the International Classification Standard of Occupations (ISCO) at the 20th International Conference of Labor Statisticians (ILCS) in October of 2018. WFOT also is actively working for the reclassification with cooperation from member organizations.
| Aprroval of New OT College in Chennai|| |
Permission has been granted by the government of Tamil Nadu to start Bachelor of Occupational Therapy course from the academic year 2018-2019 in Government Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai with an annual intake of 10 students, vide government order dated 14th September, 2018. This will be the first Government OT College in South India. AIOTA applauds the efforts of Tamil Nadu Branch/Chapter of AIOTA under the leadership of Dr. Raghu Ram, the Convener of the branch for this meticulous achievement for the growth of OT profession in South India.
| Formation of State Chapters of AIOTA|| |
AIOTA decided that status quo would be maintained in functioning of existing State Branches /Chapters of AIOTA till 31st March 2020. The existing Branches can be registered with Societies Registration Act of the respective states with prior intimation and approval of AIOTA for affiliation as an official Branch/Chapter of AIOTA. The decision to this effect was taken by AIOTA EC meeting at Chandigarh in September 2018, considering the need for sufficient time for the Branches to register as Chapters, for implementation of the decision informed in general body meeting at Nagpur.

Fatigue and Occupational Therapy: authored by Dr. Veena Slaich, formerly Head of the Department of Occupational Therapy Training and Clinical Services at Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physically Handicapped, New Delhi is published in 2018 by Ahuja Publishing House, New Delhi. Dr. Veena Slaich is an EC Member of Academic Council of OT (ACOT), AIOTA.
| Cote on “Driver Rehabilitation” and “Wheelchair Seating and Mobility”|| |
Department of Occupational Therapy of All India Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation has successfully organized 2nd certificate course on ‘Driver Rehabilitation’ on 10th March, 2018 and Continuing OT Education Program (COTE) on ‘Wheelchair Seating & Mobility’ on 29th September 2018 in collaboration with ACOT of AIOTA. Head, OT Department Dr. Anita Gupta was the organizing convener for these courses.

Short-term training program is being organized at Department of Occupational Therapy, National Institute for Locomotors Disability (NILD), Kolkata, on 20th November, 2018, for qualified occupational therapists, titled ‘Work Simulator: The Ultimate Rehabilitation System for Hand’. The workshop is aimed to offer advance knowledge, techniques and skills on use of work simulator in work skill assessment and training for optimal patient care on hand.
