This book, with the catchy title, “Hoodwinking Hope” is an interesting read for those interested in the workings of the mind. You do not need a vivid interest in psychiatry to be able to enjoy the book. One's experience of life and interest in learning about life will take you through the book and it could be really hard to put it down once started.

The story is set with the characters from a mental health clinic in the background of Nainital. The plot involves not just the usual doctor–patient scenarios but takes a deep look at the lives of all, including the consulting psychiatrists, patients, and aides at the clinic. Though not from a medical background, the author seems to have done good research to learn the workings of a mental health setting. It is all very relatable for someone who works in this field and one stands a chance of relating to some of the characters a bit too closely. The author through the story explores the ever-changing dynamics between its central characters and takes the reader through various emotions such as despair, frustration, anger, animosity, compassion, and sense of duty through its characters. As the reader goes through the chapters, they would realize that there are no absolutes in life and no character, no matter how much of an achiever, the person might seem to the outside world, s/he is not infallible. The author brings out the human vulnerabilities and their strengths through the imperfect but well-sketched characters. One cannot help but wonder about the uncertainties of life and the unpredictable turns it often takes at unexpected moments.

The easy and simple to read language with a reader-friendly font is definitely a positive aspect of the book. The detailing of the setting and the characters is the strong backbone of the writing of the book. One of the weak points could be that the chapters in the book take the reader through the perspective of different characters at different points. This can affect the continuity of the reading and may cause the reader to take time to realign and focus their attention from a different perspective.

Overall, it is an interesting read which will be a special treat for those with interest in mental health especially. It gives the reader an insider's view of the mental health setting and how it works. It can be a learning experience for budding young occupational therapists or any mental health professional to know the complexities and painstaking efforts needed to work with clients struggling with mental health. It highlights the need for self-awareness and the need to be mindful of the intertwined relationship between clients and professionals. Finally, the icing on the cake in this book would be the Indian context and relatability of such a book due to the familiarity of the culture and background of the characters.
